First, I should express my condolences for anyone ever having to use SharePoint anything. I quit a job once because it turned into nothing but SP administration. And I've been lucky enough not to use Office, almost ever, for the past few years. But then some of their products ... SQL Server is very good. So is Visual Studio, C#, and a lot of their development framework. I have a love/hate relationship with asp.net; there are a few things PHP does that should be criminal for Microsoft to neglect. But they do give you tools to go under the hood and create some very scalable software. I like that their ( low end ) dev tools are free, but I know that's not altruism; they're hoping people will create software that keeps Windows relevant.
