I heard several people who should know better blathering on about demanding a resignation from Mr. Cheney in the last few days. I have to agree. I think he should resign, but not for the reasons they’re citing. The Vice President could say it’s because of the shooting, or Iraq, or even his health, but that’s not why he should resign.

I don’t think Mr. Cheney will run for President, and I don’t think he could win if he did, but here’s the key. Another Vice President could. If Mr. Cheney were to step down now, it would give another VP the chance to hold the office for a while before he had to start campaigning for the office of President. The press is screaming for someone’s head over the “cover-up”. I think the republican party should use this excuse to put someone into the VPs chair who can win the 2008 election.

Eventually the media will realize they’ve screwed themselves, but they’ll be so ecstatic over Cheney’s resignation they won’t look beyond that for a while. The new VP should be quite comfortable in the VPs chair well before the media realizes they’ve helped the republicans win the 2008 election.

So Mr. Cheney, I think you should resign.
