Artist, Graphic Designer, or both
I saw a nice post at I Hate the Sound of My Voice today. I’ve written on similar themes before, but this is good.
Did Computers Kill the Artist?
So the other day I happened to see a commercial on television. It was for one of those unaccredited art and design type schools. I can’t remember which one now. In the commercial the girls asks the viewer if they would like to work for an ad agency or create CD packaging etc. Then she goes on to say “But you don’t think you are an artist” “Well you don’t have to be anymore.”My jaw dropped. You don’t need to be an artist? I wish someone would have told me. Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut to creating a killer CD packaging. I believe it’s shift F9 but I could be mistaken.
I’ve seen this sort of attitude before and it’s very annoying. The assumption is that anyone can do graphic design. All that you need is the right computer, or the right software. It never crosses their minds that training, talent and a lot of hard work go into the equation somewhere. Hard work, skill, training? No, that can’t be it. I must be using the wrong software.
