Blogging tip: key words

Filed under: Blog Design, Blogging, In other blogs... — HDW @ 2:47 pm

Cory Miller has an interesting blogging tip post today with the long title of: Determine Your Post’s Topic or Subject, Then Check Keyword Phrases

When thinking about writing a new post, once I’ve determined my topic and the main ideas I’m wanting to talk about in the post, I’ll go over to Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool and check the results to see what it pulls up for keyword phrases popularity.

The key there is do it naturally. Don’t force it.

I’ve been trying to get in the habit of using the right terminology when writing. It’s easy to use abbreviations, slang, and just plain wrong terminology when writing about graphic design, web design, or anything else. Not only does this reflect poorly on your writing, it lowers the ability of potential readers to find you using search engines. If you’re writing about graphic design like I often do, but never actually use the term “graphic design”, how is anybody supposed to find you? If I don’t use the proper terms when writing, then someone searching the proper term will never find my site.

I really like Mr. Miller’s idea of checking Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool even though I don’t use AdWords. It gives me ideas for subtly changing the words I’m using to better reflect the subject of my post. I don’t want to radically change my writing, but improve it. With a little help, maybe I can use words that are more appropriate, or more accurate. It should also help my site be more accurately represented by search engines like Google. It might even make me a better writer, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

  1. Hi, just found your blog and I hope you’d like to join us - or check it out - at wofoblog. It’s a meeting place or central place for different bloggers from around the world. It’s only just started - brand new canvas ready to paint.

Anyone can post there, and edit what they do etc (it’s contributor level at wordpress which I see you’re using too).

The idea is that you get a different blogging experience, new readers, and you can if you want pull those readers back to your “home” blog here.

I do hope you check it out. It would be great if you posted at some stage (hopefully sooner), as your blog is interesting and well written. I know some Australian bloggers are thinking of posting there, and they’d love it if they found a real life desert wanderer!

All the best, and feel free to email me if you have any questions, too. I’ve bookmarked your site and will be back some more any way. cheers.
