Oh, the Voodoo of Hoodoo

I was discussing good mountain trails with someone the other day, and I promised to post a few pictures of one of my favorites. I like this one because it was one of my father’s favorites. Click on the photos for larger versions.

This is Hoodoo Pass, Washington State. The first picture is taken from the bottom of the last climb. The trail is barely visible crossing the upper edge, below the cliff.

This was taken looking back from one switchback short of the summit, the trail is visible almost the entire width of the photo.

Here’s a perspective shot for you. That’s four ridden horses and two pack mules entering the first switchback. Coincidently, they are passing where photo two was taken.

  2. Up and down on horseback. For my father though, that was a pretty tame trail. He liked them steeper, with a better view.

  3. East side obviously. Looks like a great trail. It’s been so long since I’ve been hiking that I think that I’ve forgotten what altitude feels like…

  5. I posted a couple more Hoodoo photos on my next post. I’d forgotten to post a view from the top.

  6. I understand why your father loved it, the view is beautiful!

As far as the steepness goes; why didn’t you just go up and down the Grand Canyon and be done with it!!!??? I would have preferred the sure footed donkey! You would have lost me a LONG time ago! I’m sure I wouldn’t have made it to where the photographer was!!

  7. Wow now you have gone and made me home sick. I was born and raised in Montana. I grew up in Kalispell and spent most of my time in the mountains hiking up and down the mountains. You sure just caused a lot of memories to come back.

One of my favorite was a time when I was patroling some of the National forests on horseback with a U.S. Forest Ranger, (I was a deputy sheriff at the time) and we were heading into one of there cabins for the night. We were going along the trail and it was a scene out of “Sleepy Hallow”. I looked at the Ranger and told him if some guy comes riding out on a black horse with no head and carring a pumpkin in his hand I was going to shoot him first(the Ranger) for getting me into this. We had a good laugh and a great time back in those mountains.

Thanks for the bringing back the memories.

  8. The view is beautiful, but I would be sure to fall and break something vital

  9. I’ve done a lot of riding on trails much worse than that. I wasn’t particularly concerned in this case because I was riding a good horse named Hickory that I trained for my father in 1990. I’ve mentioned him elsewhere. He’s the Appaloosa in the bottom photo. Now that I think about it, that photo of Hickory with the packsaddle was taken in 1992 on the same trail. Just a few miles below the summit. That was the first time I saw Hoodoo Pass.
