Underground cities from the past

BLDGBLOG: Derinkuyu, or: the allure of the underground city

Meanwhile, Robert, my co-reader of Weisman’s book, pointed out that the discovery of Derinkuyu, by a man who simply “broke through a wall and discovered behind it a room that he’d never seen, which led to still another, and another,” is surely the ultimate undiscovered room fantasy – and I have to agree.

What a fascinating idea. Underground cities lying hidden under current cities and towns. Some beautiful photos of the various sites. I’m not interested in traveling to see a lot of the famous landmarks and structures that most tourists want to see. The Eiffel Tower for instance holds no interest for me. This on the other hand, I’d travel to see.

  1. I think we would all be amazed if we knew what was under us in some places!

There are caves, made into an entire city that was used centuries ago and even as recent as WWII as hiding places here on the Holland/Belgium border that you can get very lost in!

And oddly enough you mentioned that the Eiffel Tower holds no interest to you, but I bet the Underground Catacombs of Paris with the millions of skulls and bones just might!

  2. The catacombs seem somewhat interesting. I’d be interested if I was in the area for some other reason. I wouldn’t travel there just for that though.

  3. I will try this again as I failed the 1st challenge!!!

I said that I don’t blame you for not making a special trip to see them but since a very good friend of yours lives very close to Paris you could always make a visit and then visit the Catacombs as a side trip!

Hope I pass your challenge this time!

  4. Sage, the challenge isn’t that difficult. I give you the answer for goodness sake! You could always register and set the login for remember me, then you wouldn’t get the challenge at all.
