Debating the debate rules

Filed under: Politics — HDW @ 8:21 pm

I seems Mr. Kerry is not satisfied with the thirty five pages of rules. While he did sign them, he doesn’t agree with them entirely. The timing lights are too prominently displayed. Mr long winded himself doesn’t want to draw attention to his overtime remarks. His staff went so far as to threaten to remove them before the debate. Is he getting stranger every day or is it just me.

Original story seen on Drudge, but it disappeared before I linked it.

This mornings mutterings

Filed under: In other blogs...,Politics — HDW @ 10:56 am

The rain has stopped. Jeanne has officially passed. Had about six inches here and no flooding problems, but just down the road Roanoke got swamped. Three cheers for all of the rescuers.

Kathleen Parker wrote an clever piece this morning called The Meaning of Dan. An exceptional writer who’s articles are never less than superb.

The Rough Woodsman has some great Presidential debate predictions. I think he’s right on the money. Predictions 1, 2, and 7 seem particularly good, but I think he’ll get at least 5 out of 7.

As everyone and their brother is already reporting: Mr. Kerry, what’s with the tan? Several recent photos of Mr. Kerry show him looking very orange. Is he ready for a televised press conference 24/7 now. Got the makeup permently in place just in case? Oddly a better tan actually makes him look a little more plastic.

Kennedy’s time has passed

Ted Kennedy is still talking, but I find it hard to believe anyone is listening. More vulnerable to nuclear attack after Iraq? We were vulnerable before, and that hasn’t changed. Our state of alert has changed somewhat for the better. We are at least aware of our state of unalert.

We free millions of people for a horrid dictator, and Oh my God, the Arab would doesn’t like us. News for you Teddy, they didn’t like us before, they wanted us dead. If Kerry is elected, they’ll still want us dead. This isn’t a popularity contest. If we elect the Arab world’s choice for President, whoever that is, they’ll still want the United States to be destroyed.

We’re free, and we’re not Muslim. That alone is why they don’t like us.

Mr. Kennedy, your lips are moving, but I can only hear the wind.

Eminent Domain for private use?

Filed under: In the News — HDW @ 9:54 am

George Will has a great article this morning about a supreme court case coming up next week. New London Connecticut court gave the right of eminent domain in effect to a private company, in order to increase their tax base. A community was destroyed inn order to clear way for higher priced, and more taxable development. Really thought provoking. If this is legal, where do you draw the line? Somebody with a higher tax bracket wants my property so I get condemned?

Scary precedent to set, I’ll have to keep my eye on this case.

Kerry’s Run

Filed under: Politics — HDW @ 6:48 pm

I constantly surprised by how poorly Kerry is doing in his run for the Presidency. While you couldn’t pay me to vote for him, I thought he would be doing much better a month before the elections. Two or three months ago, I thought he was going to win, and a month ago I thought it was going to be close. I no longer think either of those things. I think he’s going to lose big.

If I believed in huge conspiracies I’d think someone was sabotaging the Democratic ticket this year to clear the way for Hillary in 2008. Some of the mistakes are just too obvious. Hollywood wouldn’t have come up with some of these gags if they were doing a spoof on Presidential runs. The whole “I don’t fall down” snowboard incident, the assault weapon he does or doesn’t have, the SUVs he does or doesn’t have. And his speeches… I’m finding it hard to believe someone in Bush’s office hasn’t been taking control of Kerry’s teleprompter. Can’t you just see it. The early morning staff meeting. Bush and his top advisors huddled around some nameless computer geek who looks up and smiles… So, what should we have Kerry say today?

Hurricane and house

Filed under: General Ranting — HDW @ 5:21 pm

Hurricane Jeanne is expected tomorrow morning. I’m trying to get the house sealed up before the rain. Rain is all we’ll really get here in Virginia, and maybe a some good wind gusts. I’m trying to fix a flashing that tore loose, but I’m not having much luck.

The Money Pit (my house) is trying to suck me dry still, but I might have seen the end. I hope I’ve seen the end. I’m glad I bought a house that didn’t need any work. The “no work needed” house has only cost me several hundred hours of work, and about a years salary in the two months since I bought it. I hate to think what a fixer upper would have cost me. Seriously the former owner screwed me so bad on this deal it isn’t even funny. I’d sue if she had anything to take. She’s old, broke, and apparently senile. Unfortunately only one of those was obvious when I bought a house from her.
