Photo fraud

Filed under: In other blogs..., PhotoShop, Photography, Photos — HDW @ 11:54 am

Michelle Malkin has been the victim of a poorly done PhotoShop fraud. It’s a shame when political discourse sinks to this level. Oh, I’m not above an image spoof, I’ve even done one of Ms. Malkin, but I try to keep them humorous, and I always identify them in some way (sometimes subtly) as altered files.

Jackass

Filed under: General Ranting — HDW @ 9:08 pm

I’ve not seen either of the Jackass movies, and I have no desire to, but I found this description of Johnny Knoxville’s muse to be quite humorous.

He (Knoxville) is quick to attribute his success – if one calls conjuring up abusive situations a success – to some special “muses,” including whiskey, ignorance and not wanting to take on a 9-to-5 job. - The Daily Evergreen

No, don’t read any further. Go and see them all… then come back of course.

John of Argghhh!!! has “A good war story.” An incredible story, well worth following the links and reading the whole thing.

Telegraph | News | ‘I can see no end to the killing zone, and for the first time I feel real fear’

Pte Johnson Beharry VC is the first person since 1965 to be awarded Britain’s highest award for gallantry while still alive. A 27-year-old native of Grenada, who came to Britain in 1999 and joined the British Army in 2001, he was a member of the 1st Battalion Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment when he was posted to Iraq in April 2004. He was awarded the VC on March 18, 2005. This is his story, taken from his soon to be published book, ‘Barefoot Soldier’.

Limits of knowledge

Filed under: General Ranting, In other blogs... — HDW @ 12:45 pm

Adam Graham over at Adam’s Blog has an open trackback meme going on. I thought I’d respond since it’s based on a Sherlock Holmes premise.

In “A Study in Scarlet” Dr. John Watson lays out the limits of the great Sherlock Holmes’ knowledge:

Knowledge of Literature, Philosophy, and Astronomy-Nil

Knowledge of Politics-Feeble

Knowledge of Botany.—Variable…

So, to define the limits of my knowledge:

1) What is something you know practically nothing about?
Geology. I know, that was Adam’s answer, but I know zero about Geology. Higher math is on this list as well. When the answers are a real number, I do great. When the answers start to be other equations, you’re on your own.

2) What is something where your knowledge is weak?
Immunology. While this is my wife’s field of research, my grasp on the details of what she does is vague. She on the otherhand can’t do CSS.

3) What is something you know just enough about to get by?
PHP, but I’m learning.

4) What is something where you have a profound depth of knowledge?
Graphic Design, Art, practical horsemanship, and random trivia are areas where my level of knowledge is pretty high. I’m also an avid reader when I have the time, so my knowldge of modern literature is fairly good, though I’m not a fan of the traditional “classics”. From the age of ten or so into my twenties I read 10+ books a week. Since I’ve married I’ve slowed significantly, but it’s not unusual for me to read a couple of books a week. I’ll read anything that interests me, from Louis L’Amour to technical manuals.

5) What is something that you do even though you don’t do it well?
Write (If you’ve read this blog before, you’ve likely figured that out already)

6) What is something you are expert at?
I’m an expert at a number of reasonably diverse things. Horseback riding and Graphic Design are two that readers of this site might guess. I’m somewhat of a jack of all trades when it comes to home improvement. I’m not an expert at any one thing, but I have a wide range of skills which get me through just about any project. One thing people who know me would be surprised by… I rollerblade very well.

Update: I thought of one more thing. I’m an expert sculptor. It’s actually what me education was in. I work in metal, most often wire and metal rod. I usually sculpt horses. In wire they look like a three dimensional line drawing.

So, who’s going to join me on this meme… Anyone?

CSS and Herding Cats

Filed under: General Ranting, Graphic Design, Web Design — HDW @ 3:30 pm

I’ve been working in circles for the last few days. Work best described as herding cats. Working hard, little progress, not all progress is forward. The CSS on a site I’m building has been giving me fits. Turns out most of my problem was caused by Margin Collapse. Fortunately that annoying problem is fixed now and I can move on to something interesting.

It’s sad when the most productive thing you’ve done all day is spend a few minutes fixing a CSS problem for someone else. A designer from England e-mailed me a CSS problem that was bugging him. The link styles on a site he’s building were a little off. He had styles that weren’t defined quite narrow enough. Made for an interesting now you see it, now you don’t problem. It’s nice to know that one thing is working that wasn’t before. It didn’t help my own productivity any, but you take what you can get.

Party, what party?

Filed under: General Ranting, Politics — HDW @ 4:09 pm

I’m curious about something. In this part of Virginia politicians don’t put their political affiliation on any of their advertising. Is this a national trend for local elections? If so, what an odd trend. The other odd trend I’m seeing is mentioning the opponent by name. The only name I remember after seeing a political ad is the opponents because it was mentioned about 20 times. Between the two weird trend all of the ads start looking the same:

“Hi I’m Bob, I stand for Faith, family values and National Security. My opponent, Fred, stands for none of these things. I also think Fred might be a bedwetter… I approved this ad, Fred didn’t.”

I might have exaggerated a little on the rhetoric, but the idea is the same. There is rarely a mention of political affiliation, and the opponent’s name is usually mention 2-3 times more than the candidate. Seems like extremely poor advertising to me.

Support the troops?

Filed under: In other blogs... — HDW @ 12:17 pm

Smash let’s members of Code Pink at a vigil know what he thinks of them and their “support” of the troops. You need to read the whole thing, but here’s a taste.

The Indepundit

“You should be ashamed of the way you treated those soldiers. Ashamed! If that is what you think supporting the troops means — turn your backs on them when they come to talk to you — then you are either a fool, a coward, or a hypocrite. I leave it to each of you to decide which word fits you best.

“The charade is over. We all know that you do not support the troops. If you did, you wouldn’t turn your backs on them. You disrespected my brothers, on our front porch. So let me be absolutely clear: You may have a slip of paper from the City of Washington recognizing your right to stand here, but you are not welcome here.

“I want you to think about what I’ve said. Your vigil here does not support the troops. It does not comfort them in any way. It only aggravates them. When you go home tonight, reflect on the pain that you have caused. And if you have a shred — an ounce — of human decency, don’t come back.

“Goodnight, ladies.”

Where are the tweakers?

Filed under: Graphic Design, Web Design — HDW @ 11:34 am

Seth’s Blog: Where are the tweakers?

If I want my car to go a bit faster, there’s a garage in town that will tweak it for me.

If I want my stereo to sound a little better, there’s a guy who will install cables and such and upgrade it.

There are more than a billion websites. Where are the tweakers?

Another great post by Seth Godin. Tweakers, a favorite subject of mine. A job that requires an odd mix of talent, organization, and inspiration. The one common theme in my rather eclectic employment history is probably my penchant for tweaking the design departments I’ve worked in. Every design job I’ve had, save one, has included a significant amount of transition. Upgrading software and hardware, streamlining procedures, restructuring of the department in some way. Transition is somewhat in the nature of the profession, but I seem to be attracted to companies that need help getting their design departments back on track. It’s very rewarding to look back and see the changes you’ve made.

I don’t think I exactly qualify as one of Mr. Godin’s Website Tweakers, but in the last few months especially I’ve been doing a lot of that sort of thing. I’m really looking forward to see where this goes.

The 25 worst tech products of all time

Filed under: Computers, General Ranting, Humor — HDW @ 9:23 am

This is quite funny actually. Microsoft has several products in the top ten.

The 25 worst tech products of all time - InterGovWorld.com

These products are so bad, they belong in the high-tech hall of shame.

At PC World, we spend most of our time talking about products that make your life easier or your work more productive. But, it’s the lousy ones that linger in our memory long after their shrinkwrap has shriveled, and that make tech editors cry out, “What have I done to deserve this?”

I thought Internet Explorer 6 might rank higher, but being the eighth worst tech product of all time is pretty bad.

How insecure? In June 2004, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) took the unusual step of urging PC users to use a browser–any browser–other than IE.

Developers are like Computers

Filed under: Graphic Design, Web Design — HDW @ 8:38 am

mobcode » Don’t thrash

Another way developers act like computers is they thrash. You have seen your computer do this. You try to run too many things at once. The computer runs out of memory and starts swapping to and from disk. You hear the disk grinding and performance grinds to a halt as the computer is stuck constantly swapping back and forth to disk. Nothing gets done.

A clever post, and very true. Nothing ruins productivity like adding the one extra job that you didn’t have time for.

A little photo humor, or is that PhotoShop humor… The Navy borrows a recruiting photo from the Coast Guard, and gets caught by the Armorer. I followed up by accusing them both of stealing the photo from the Empire.
