Snap Preview – Oooh Sparkly!

Nick Wilson at Performancing.com has a review of sorts of the new Snap feature everyone seems to be using. I couldn’t agree more.

3 Reasons Why Snap Preview is Ruining Your Blog, and Hurting Your Readership

Its intrusive, obstructive and unuseful in almost every respect and use case. The fact that so many big blogs are using it, big well respected blogs, does not mean that it’s useful, it just means that they, like most bloggers, have all the self restraint of a magpie in a sparkly things factory.

As a rule I try to stay away from graphic design fads, too much “here today gone tomorrow” for me. Web design fads are even worse. One day you’ve never heard of something, the next it’s on every site you look at. Shortly there after it’s nowhere to be seen, and everyone is denying they ever used it.

I always try for a more timeless style. Sure, it may not be the biggest and best technological marvel of the age, but I won’t have to rebuild it tomorrow to stay on top either. I don’t have anything against the idea of Snap Preview, I just think it’s just being over utilized. It’s graphic design equivalent is glossy paper. Sure my layout sucks, and the logo is horrible, but I put it on shiny paper!

The disadvantages of wealth

Nothing is more admirable than the fortitude with which millionaires tolerate the disadvantages of their wealth. – Rex Stout

Mr. Stout was one of my favorite authors when I was a kid. He wrote the Nero Wolfe series in case you aren’t familiar with him. Do you think he was talking about John Edwards? Isn’t it a shame that he and his wife can only afford “a functional home with room for her children to play outdoors and a large kitchen to entertain friends and family.” Must be tough.

Just curious

Filed under: About this blog — HDW @ 5:09 pm

I’m fascinated by Sitemeter. Not the stats themselves, lots of visitors is nice, but I’m somewhat ambivalent about that most days. What interests me, is what brings people to this site. Search engines are often the source of my traffic. Sitemeter lets me know what search terms they used to arrive. I can understand getting hits from design related searches, humor maybe. I get a fair amount of hits from RL Klika’s Rakkasans photos, and that makes sense. What’s got me curious right now though, is why everyone is looking for Evan Esar quotes? Can anyone tell me why? Was he in the news recently or something?

I’m working on the design update of a fairly large large site. Since it’s sucking up what little brainpower I normally have, blogging has been light. I should be able to speed things back up soon. I’d appreciate everyone leaving comments and trackbacks, because vicarious entertainment seems the only kind I have time for right now.

Apparently I can’t type. For those of you who didn’t see the screwed up title on this post before I fixed it… shame on you for not subscribing to the RSS feed and being notified of my errors immediately.

Site updated

Filed under: About this blog,Blogging,WordPress — HDW @ 2:28 pm

I’ve updated four blogs, including this one, to WordPress 2.1 in the last 45 minutes. Upgrades are very smooth. I don’t use too many plugins, so that wasn’t much of an issue. All of my plugins had a version approved for this version already, though I did have to upgrade one plugin. I’d apparently fallen behind on plugin updates.

Graphic and Web Designer – Will work for food

Anybody need design work done? If you need a great website designed, of a unique blog design, maybe we can work something out. I’ve met some very nice people through this site, and it occurred to me that if I have to be working for someone, it might as well be people I like.

As I seem to do every few years, I’m considering moving. Not sure where this time… maybe the Midwest. In previous moves, I’ve had to find work after I’ve finished unpacking boxes. This time, since the move isn’t eminent, I’ve decide to plan ahead. I’ve been considering making making a move to more of an online business for some time, but I think the time has come to pursue that goal. In some ways a virtual workplace better suits my nature than a brick and stone office. I’d love to find the perfect place to live, but for now I’ll just keep looking.

Design Review – Earl Emerson dot com

Filed under: Design Review,Web Design — HDW @ 12:18 pm

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. I thought I’d take a look at the website of one of my favorite authors, Earl Emerson. A real disappointment. He’s an incredible author, but his website is doing him a disservice.

Earl Emerson dot com

Style:
My biggest problem with the style of the site is that it is both dated, and inappropriate for the author.

From the construction of the site, I think the dated nature of the site is caused by the fact that it has not been updated in quite some time. The web is an ever changing place, and a site that was cutting edge yesterday will be old hat tomorrow. The website is a 90′s retro looking site with a gray and blue color palette. While this may have been somewhat appropriate in the 90′s when it was probably designed, times have changed. It’s aged look makes it look out of date before you even check the content.

I think it’s an inappropriate style in that it doesn’t reflect the style of the author’s writing. None of his books would look good with a dust jacket in this style. I can see designing a site to reflect his latest book, or possible his latest series of books, but a site that doesn’t reflect any of them is a poor choice in my opinion.

The site’s style and color palette are also not very flattering to the cover images of Mr. Emerson’s books. The high quality design employed on Mr. Emerson’s book covers looks out of place when displayed on a site like this.

Structure:
The structure of the site is a little odd. While there is likely a reason for it, I’m not sure what that reason could be. It is, at it’s base, a table based layout. The table based layout is however, inside a series of frames. The only benefit of this frame system seems to be to allow the Emerson site to pull the pages from another site where they are hosted. This may be a cost cutting solution of some kind, but in this era of low cost hosting, I don’t really see the point.

The code used in these pages is dated and I’d be concerned that it would not accurately be displayed in all browsers. While it did load in both IE and Firefox, it had a tendency to stop part way through loading. This partial page display tendency was fairly annoying, as the navigation bar seemed to be the most likely not to load.

Content:
The content of the site consists mostly of schedules for book signings, and book summaries. While this is a valid site format for an author, it needs to be kept up to date. The book summary section of this site is not complete, and the book signing schedule is out of date.

The alternative to this type of content would be to focus on content that is not time specific. Removing the time specific content and focusing on book summaries for instance. They can be added over time, and never really go out of date.

What I would change:
This is another site that I would start over from the ground up. Some of the content is perfectly fine, but the site structure and design needs to be completely stripped out and replaced.

Since a new site structure is in order, I’d recommend, as I usually do, a completely CSS based layout. The benefit of CSS in this case is that it would easily allow for design changes and updates site-wide, while leaving the existing content in place. With this sort of structure the site could easily be stylistically changed with each new book.

I like the idea of having the book signings, new book premiers, and other appearance dates available. I would update this section into a more easily updated format. Including an RSS feed with section to let interested people know of updates would be a good addition as well.

The book summaries are a nice section too, it just needs to be finished. While it might be understandable to not have the newest book available, missing the older books isn’t. This section needs to be updated, and kept up to date.

The author’s bio section could also stand to be updated. Like the rest of the site, this section contains dated information. While it was perfectly appropriate when it was put up, it has become outdated since. I’d recommend that it either be updated regularly, or replaced with timeless style biography.

Summary:
This site suffers mostly from neglect. It has been designed to be updated frequently, but that’s not what’s happening. It needs to be redesigned, and kept up to date. The alternative is to take it down entirely. In my opinion, not having a website is a better solution than what is currently being used.

Quality customer service… or not

Snopes has a story on the quality of service at Discount Floor Mats. Seems the customer service person responded in a less than friendly fashion when asked about shipping to a military base. I won’t steal Snopes thunder by excerpting them, but I think it’s safe to say that at least that customer service person does not support the troops.

Blogging tip: key words

Filed under: Blog Design,Blogging,In other blogs... — HDW @ 2:47 pm

Cory Miller has an interesting blogging tip post today with the long title of: Determine Your Post’s Topic or Subject, Then Check Keyword Phrases

When thinking about writing a new post, once I’ve determined my topic and the main ideas I’m wanting to talk about in the post, I’ll go over to Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool and check the results to see what it pulls up for keyword phrases popularity.

The key there is do it naturally. Don’t force it.

I’ve been trying to get in the habit of using the right terminology when writing. It’s easy to use abbreviations, slang, and just plain wrong terminology when writing about graphic design, web design, or anything else. Not only does this reflect poorly on your writing, it lowers the ability of potential readers to find you using search engines. If you’re writing about graphic design like I often do, but never actually use the term “graphic design”, how is anybody supposed to find you? If I don’t use the proper terms when writing, then someone searching the proper term will never find my site.

I really like Mr. Miller’s idea of checking Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool even though I don’t use AdWords. It gives me ideas for subtly changing the words I’m using to better reflect the subject of my post. I don’t want to radically change my writing, but improve it. With a little help, maybe I can use words that are more appropriate, or more accurate. It should also help my site be more accurately represented by search engines like Google. It might even make me a better writer, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Does blog design matter?

Darren Rowse over at ProBlogger had an interesting post yesterday called Does Blog Design Matter in an Age of Feed Readers?

He goes on to say that it does, but it’s an interesting thought. Most new blogs I find through RSS based searches I have loaded in my feed reader. Virtually all of my daily reading is via the reader. Does the design really matter, when i rarely see the sites? Yes! I have to admit that I agree something Mr. Rowse writes in his fifth point.

design does impact whether I subscribe or not

While I don’t see the sites on a daily basis, I know what they look like. I base my opinions of sites partially on the design. I honestly don’t care what the design is, but the design is one factor that I take into account to tell me how important the blog is to the writer. If the theme is poorly thought out, and poorly maintained, I likely won’t subscribe. I want a site that the writer cares about. This doesn’t mean a site needs a custom theme, I’m not adverse to standard templates, but I want to see something that is loved and maintained. If I see that, I’ll hang around long enough to see how I like the writing.

Update: Peter at The Blog Studio is hitting this topic too with Does Blog Design Matter?.

You want to find what?

Over the years, I’ve developed a knack for finding things on the internet. (In my office, all bets are off.) Not a particularly noteworthy skill maybe, but it can be very helpful. How do I find what I’m looking for? As I explained to someone recently, “It’s part luck, part choosing the right search engine, part phrasing the request right.” The luck I can’t help you with, I just happen to be a phenomenally lucky person. Choosing the right search engine on the other hand I can help with. Here is a list, by no means comprehensive, of search services that I am familiar with. I’ve broken them up by category that I use them for, but there is some obvious overlap. Most major search engines for instance will search for images, but I’ve listed my favorites. I’ve highlighted my preferred sites by making it italic.

Phrasing your search properly is very important, and often underestimated. (These suggestions will apply to most major search engines. Please ignore brackets [] the search terms below.) If you were to search for the three word phase [one two three] you would get results which included any site containing the words one, two, or three. Priority would be given to results containing more than one of those words. If you searched for the phrase [one + two + three] you would get only results which included all three words. If you were to enclose your terms in quotation marks ["one two three"] the results would include only results which contain all three of those words, in that orientation. You can also search for results within a site [site: highdesertwanderer.com] or that link to a site [link: www.highdesertwanderer.com]. Most search engines have pages similar to this one of yahoo’s which guide you through the search options available. Learn how each engine works, and you’ll rapidly improve your ability to find what you want.

Thank you to Sage’s Unicorn for this posting idea. I think she’ll appreciate the pink.
